Your body doesn’t repair itself while you’re busy. It does the real work on the night shift — rebuilding tissue, clearing the day’s load, settling the nervous system down out of “go” mode. Most of our recipes are, quietly, evening recipes. So here they are strung into one routine — a handful of small steps, most linking to the full recipe or write-up, plus a couple of plain-sense habits that need no jar at all.
None of this is complicated or expensive. That’s the point. A short list of things, most of them made from ingredients you can name, done around the end of the day.
The checklist
Roughly in the order you’d do them — it starts with dinner and ends at the sink, built so nothing undoes the step before it (you don’t want a face mask before the shower, and brushing your teeth belongs dead last).

A daily serving of fermented cabbage
Start at dinner, before the wind-down even begins: a serving of fermented cabbage — sauerkraut or kimchi. For a sensitive gut this is one of the highest-yield daily habits there is — live cultures and the acids and fiber that feed them, in a food you can make for pennies. Cabbage itself is a top-tier (“Frequently”) vegetable for the Intestinal type, and sauerkraut sits at “Moderately”; the ferment adds the probiotics on top.
Buy it raw and unpasteurized (refrigerated, not the shelf-stable canned kind, which is cooked and has no live cultures) or make your own. Kimchi brings a little chili heat — good on a strong day, easy to go light on when your gut is off.
Five minutes on the vibrating plate with a massage gun
Once dinner’s done and you’re into the last hour, start with movement, because everything after this is stillness. Stand on a whole-body vibration plate for about five minutes, and work a percussion massage gun over the tight, sore spots while you’re up there — calves, quads, shoulders, lower back.
Be honest about the mechanism, because the marketing on these machines is loud. Your lymphatic system has no pump of its own — it moves when your muscles contract and squeeze it along. That’s why movement helps lymph and sitting doesn’t. Whole-body vibration and a massage gun are a mild, passive way to get some of that muscle-pumping and circulation going at the end of a day you spent mostly at a desk, and they genuinely help sore, stiff muscles feel looser before bed. What they aren’t is a detox miracle — treat this as gentle circulation and recovery, not magic. For the full honest breakdown — what whole-body vibration actually does, what’s overstated, and who should skip it — see do vibration plates actually work?
For the lymph side of the story — cypress oil and a gua sha stone, and the honest version of what “lymphatic support” actually means — see our lymphatic support write-up. And if a muscle is genuinely aching, follow the plate with the sore-muscle massage oil worked into the spot.
Scar mobility oil, across the line
If you’re carrying a closed, settled scar — a C-section line, an old surgical scar, a knee — this is the moment to work it, while your skin is warm and you’re already standing at the bathroom counter. A few drops of the comfrey + rosehip Scar Mobility Oil, massaged along the line, then across it, for two to five minutes. The cross-fiber massage is what helps a stuck scar move again; the oil is the glide.
Closed skin only — no scab, no fresh incision — and the comfrey rules on that page apply in full. Keep the muscle oil from the plate step around the scar, not on top of it: different bottle, different job.
Liver support body oil over the ribs
Your liver does much of its work overnight, so evening is the sensible time to support it from the outside. Massage the Liver Support Body Oil — sesame oil and six essential oils — over the lower right ribs, where the liver sits. It’s the topical half of the same liver routine the recovery drink supports from the inside.
Egg & yogurt face mask, on a clean face
Now that the shower’s behind you and your face is clean and dry, this is the spot for the egg & yogurt face mask: about 20 cents, out of the fridge, left on 15–20 minutes for a temporary tightening feel, then rinsed off. It’s a pleasant weekly ritual — twice a week, not nightly — not a treatment for a deep scar (that’s the scar oil’s job).
Two hard rules from that post carry over: use a fresh egg and throw the leftovers away, and don’t put the scar salve on top of raw egg — the mask is for the face, the scar oil for the body scar.
Evening recovery drink, 30–60 minutes before bed
With the topical steps done, sip the evening recovery drink: a warm, deliberately lean cup built on magnesium glycinate and ashwagandha, with glycine, L-theanine, and our Liver Breaker herbal formula, and a fish-oil capsule alongside. It’s the drink that helps the body clock out of “go” mode and into repair.
Keep it lean and add one thing at a time so you actually know what’s working — a cup with five sedatives in it isn’t a stack, it’s a guess. The full reasoning, doses, and the honest cautions (ashwagandha, melatonin, how much magnesium really) are all in that post.
Evening supplements, taken with the drink
The drink is the vehicle for a small evening supplement stack — take these as you sip, because the night shift is when the liver and repair machinery do most of their work:
- Magnesium glycinate — already the workhorse in the recovery-drink recipe: muscle relaxation and sleep, in the gentle nighttime form. The full dose reasoning (“how much magnesium, really”) is on that page.
- Fish oil — also part of the drink routine: 1–2 capsules of omega-3 (EPA/DHA), taken with the drink so the fat helps it absorb.
- TUDCA — the one new add-on. It’s a bile acid (tauroursodeoxycholic acid) some people take in the evening for bile flow and liver support, which is why it pairs with the liver support routine. Evidence outside clinical liver disease is limited, so treat it as an optional extra, not a staple — and clear it with your doctor first, especially if you have gallstones, a bile-duct blockage, or you’re pregnant or nursing.
Take them with a big glass of water — the capsules go down easier, and it’s a simple bit of overnight hydration. (If a full glass right before bed sends you to the bathroom at 3 a.m., drink it a little earlier in the evening.) Same rule as the drink itself: add one thing at a time so you know what’s actually doing the work.
Brush your teeth
The unglamorous one, and the reason it’s last: nothing goes in your mouth after this. No jar, no recipe, no clever ingredient — just the two minutes that protect the teeth you’d very much like to keep. Every elaborate wellness routine in the world is worth less than this plain, non-negotiable habit done every single night.
That’s the whole barefoot idea in one step: the simple thing you’ll actually do beats the fancy thing you won’t.
A sensible order, one more time
- With dinner: a serving of fermented cabbage (sauerkraut or kimchi).
- Move first (plate + massage gun) — it’s the only step that isn’t winding down.
- Shower, then do the topicals on warm, clean skin (scar oil, liver oil).
- Mask on a clean dry face while you make the drink.
- Sip the drink as you settle, 30–60 minutes before lights-out, take your supplements (magnesium, fish oil, TUDCA) with a glass of water.
- Brush your teeth last, and you’re done.
You don’t need every step every night. The fermented cabbage, the drink, water, and brushing your teeth are the everyday backbone; the mask is twice a week; the scar and liver oils are for as long as you’re working on those. Build the routine you’ll actually keep.
